The film is based on the comic book Hellblazer. At first this title was given to the film as well, but was finally changed to Constantine to prevent unavoidable associations with the film Hellraiser.
John Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is a detective with supernatural abilities. Since birth he has been able to see angels and demons present on Earth in a human form. Constantine uses his gift in his struggle against dark forces, keeping an unsteady balance between Good and Evil in our world and trying to plead forgiveness from God for his attempt to commit suicide in his youth and to escape Hell. Satan himself promised to escort him there when his time comes. And there's really not much time left: he is dying, slowly but remorselessly, of lung cancer. Chances to redeem his sins lessen every day, when suddenly it becomes known to Constantine that Satan's son wants to break into our world to become its ultimate ruler...
This film is about the eternal fight for human souls between Heaven and Hell. It’s about betrayal and martyrdom, self-sacrifice and forgiveness. Sinner and righteous can easily exchange their roles, reminding us once more that the ways of God are unpredictable.
The spectator will be impressed by the dynamic and intricate plot, rapid and unexpected ending. Great amount of stunning special effects adds to the exciting and thrilling action, and the black-red shade of the film this movie is made on intensifies the atmosphere of “another world” the main character lives in.
